Canary Island wine

by Neil Morris

The unusual landscape, warm climate and diverse grape varieties of the islands produce distinctive and fruity wines that are rarely enjoyed beyond the island shores due to the great local demand. This has not always been the case however and for many hundreds of years the sweet wines of the Canary Islands were exported and enjoyed by foreigners, including the UK.

The traditional sweet wines are still being made using the same centuries-old techniques but they are now made alongside exciting modern wines that have a character unique to the region. The best chance you have of sampling these wines is to visit the islands yourself as they seem to be keeping it all to themselves!

There are currently 10 DO regions producing wines using some lesser-known grape varieties such as Listán Negro, Listán Blanco, Negramoll, Tintilla, Moscatel Negro, Prieto, Malvasía, Marmajuelo, Albillo, Bastardo, Moscatel, Bujariego and Sabro. Unlike the mainland, many of the vineyards here specialize in the production of white and rose wines as the conditions are more suited to their production.
