Castilla La Mancha wine region

Spains second largest region is so vast that it is no wonder that so much wine is grown here; in fact, over half of all Spains vineyards are located in the region including some of the largest estates in the world.

Despite being a region of prolific production it has not always been associated with the best quality wine and once had a reputation for mass-producing cheap table wine using low-cost methods. That reputation no longer applies and the region, perhaps more than any other in all of Spain, has re-invented itself as a serious player in the world of quality wine.

There are nine Denominaciónes de Origen here, seven Denominaciónes de Origen de Pago and three members of the independent Grandes Pagos de Espana group.

White Grape varieties used in the region include Airen, Viura, Macabeo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdejo, Moscatel de Grano Menudo, Riesling, Parellada, Viognier, Gewürztraminer, Pedro Ximénez and Torrontes.

Red Varieties include Tempranillo, Garnacha, Moravia, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Monastrell, Bobal, Graciano, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Mencia.

With so much variety on offer it is no surprise that there is a perfect wine for every Castile La Mancha recipe, every occasion and every price range. Many of the wines from the regions are exported and can now be enjoyed worldwide.
