Castilla y Leon wine

toro landscape

Castilla y Leon is the largest region in Spain and has a impressive variety of wine including some of the most famous Denominaciones in Spain.

This variety is due to the diverse terrains and climatic conditions that exist within the region, where large flat plains are contrasted by snow-capped mountain ranges and sweeping green valleys, where some areas enjoy mild micro-climates and others experience blisteringly hot summers followed by bitterly cold winters. The result is an exciting region that caters for all tastes; from the fiesty reds of Toro to the classy whites of Rueda; from the world class reds of Ribera del Duero to the Cava of Arando de Duero this is possibly the most eclectic wine region in all of Spain.

Ribera del Duero is home to some world famous wines such as Vega Sicilia and Tinto Pesquera and the Tempranillo grape is predominantly used in this region. The white wine produced in Rueda, primarily uses the Verdejo grape variety. Due to the size of the region there are literally hundreds of grape varieties used, some of which are so old or unusual that they remain unidentified.

All along the Duero valley heading towards Portugal there are small exciting wine makers producing some great wines and, as with many other areas in Spain, some of the most surprising finds can be discovered off the beaten track.
