The region

Ribera del GuadianaRibera del Guadiana is one of the newest and most dynamic Denominaciónes de Origen in Spain. Situated in Extremadura, the region has been producing modern, high-quality wines with great expression of character since they were awarded D.O status in 1999.

New technology and a passionate hands-on approach has propelled this region to the forefront of cutting-edge wine making in Spain; producing wines of distinction that still offer excellent value for money - if you can track them down!

The official counsel of the region describes their wines as "Dynamic and different" and exclaim that you can "taste the land in every mouthful" and they seem to be doing a great job of marketing the Ribera del Guadiana brand.

The wine

The Crash tinto wine makers at Pago los Balancines are clearly determined to get their wines noticed and they appear to have succeeded. One look at the Pop-art label - of which there are six different designs - and this wine gets people talking. The novelty continues with the bright purple cork and before you have even tasted a drop, Crash has put a smile on your face.

The label actually reflects the wine really well; it is modern, risky, innovative and fun. There is character in abundance with sweet and savoury aromas of red fruit jam and a rich cherry colour. The flavour is intricate to say the least and has many soft layers with subtle bursts of red fruit, hints of juniper and a warm satisfying finish that leaves you intrigued for the next mouthful.

This is a well-crafted dynamic wine that surprises with its combination of depth, fruitiness and complexity despite the lack of oak ageing. It should stand up well to strong meat or game dishes but is interesting enough to drink on its own or with simple tapas of ham and olives.

Perfect for the adventurous Spanish wine drinker who appreciates high-quality modern wine that expresses regional character. If that sounds like you then grab it while you can!
