The region

utiel requenaUtiel-Requena is a region of extremes; experiencing long, hot and dry summers followed by cold winters but the vines here are well-adapted to the conditions. The methods of production have also been adapted to bring out the best of the grapes and the conditions. The Bobal grape variety is native to the region and occupies over 80% of the vineyards; this variety of grape is only found in very small quantities outside of this region. The Bobal grape has a fruity and acidic character and here it has been blended well with Tempranillo to produce this elegant wine.

The wine

Once in the glass, this smooth and medium-bodied wine from Utiel-Requena is instantly agreeable; it has inviting scents of warm liquorice and fresh orchard fruits. On the tongue it is packed full of juice and the acidic nature of the Bobal grape makes it mouth-watering and fresh. The fruitiness is balanced by the subtle savoury notes from the Tempranillo and the result is an exceptionally drinkable and versatile wine.

Perfect for drinking with a hearty Paella made with rabbit and chicken.

Rating: 7.5/10 (info on scoring system)
