The region

The traditional red wines of the Campo de Borja DO in Aragon were once known for their strong and robust characteristics. The combination of vines, climate and soil, naturally produced wines of a slightly heavier quality that were a perfect match for the hearty stews and casseroles that dominated the countryside cuisine. As the cuisine of the region has developed, however, so have the wines and although reds of this style are still produced, they are now less fashionable and the wine makers of Aragon have changed their philosophy.

Aragon wine production is now about embracing new techniques to enhance the traditional characters and deliver modern and interesting wines that give a respectful nod to the past. Spanish wine experts are now talking with excitement rather than scepticism about the wine regions of Aragon.

The wine

In my on-going pursuit of bargain Spanish reds for under £10, I stumbled upon the latest vintage of this red from the exciting Campo de Borja DO in the region of Aragon. This wine is a typical example of modern Spanish wine-making that still manages to retain the character of the classic Spanish flavours of Garnacha and Tempranillo.

This Gran Lopez is yet another quality wine produced under the guidance of Scottish wine maker Norrel Robertson; a Master of Wine now applying his trade in the region of Aragon.

The 2011 vintage is instantly fresh and vibrant with warm flavours of cherry and red currant and a touch of cinnamon spice. This is easy-drinking wine at its best and would be easy to pair with most red meat dishes or a classic fish recipe such as Trucha a la Navarra.

The aromatic Garnacha grape thrives in this region and Campo de Borja has some of the best quality Granacha vines in Spain. The wines produced from these vines have traditionally been powerful and full-bodied but modern techniques have been embraced resulting in more delicate and rounded flavours.

This wine is yet more proof that the once robust and wild reds of Aragon have been truly tamed and can now be approached without any fear.
