The region

montsantThe winemakers of D.O. Montsant region have spent the last decade forging a place in the world wine market. Their philosophy throughout has been to remain true to the region and produce wines of high quality that reflect the soil, grapes and climate of the region.

This Catalonian D.O. engulfs the world famous Priorat region and has around 2000 hectares of vineyards producing just 5 million bottles a year. The wines mainly feature the local grapes varieties, Grenache and Carignan.

The mountainous landscape is rocky but rich in forest and olive groves. The vineyards are situated on the lower slopes of the mountains between 300 and 700 metres and the terrain varies from slate and granite to chalk and clay.

Limbeu 2009 review

Limbeu 2009 is a great introduction to the unique characteristics of the Montsant region. It is medium-bodied wine made from a blend that is dominated by a local variety of the Garnacha grape. It is fairly young and fresh, and retains plenty of crisp and smooth mineral flavours. Extra depth is gained by 10 months maturation in oak. There is plenty of red fruit amongst the earthy, savoury tones and there is also a pleasing level of spice.

This is an honest wine that reflects the mineral nature of the soil and the organic techniques employed by the winemakers. It has plenty of regional character and a value to quality ratio that is hard to beat. Higly recommended.

Rating: 8.75/10 (info on scoring system)
