Alcohol by volume: 13.5%

Year: 2009

Region: Costers del Segre DO - Les Garrigues (Catalonia)

The region

The Costers del Segre DO is located in the Lleida province of the region of Catalonia. The DO consists of six sub-zones; Artesa de Segre (north), Valls de Riucorb (southeast), Les Garrigues (southeast), Raïmat (west), Segria (west), Urgell (central) and Pallars Jussa (northwest).

Located between the Pyrenees to the north and the River Ebro in the south, the area enjoys a continental climate and a variety of geological conditions that are centered around the basin of the river Segre. The weather is mainly warm and dry with a hint of Mediterranean influence; the lack of rainfall in compensated by humidity as the warm air meets the cool winds rolling down from the Pyrenees in the north. The winters are generally mild and dry with only occasional frost or snow.

The wine

New to Sainsburys this month, Llebre 2009 is produced by the talented winemaker Tomàs Cusiné and takes its name from the Catalan name for Tempranillo - Ull de Llebre - which means 'eye of the hare'. This is also reflected in the label which is adorned with an eye-catching orange label depicting a couple of pencil-sketched hares.

The wine is a blend of Tempranillo (28%), Merlot (21%), Cabernet Sauvignon (18%), Garnacha (12%), Carinena (11%) and Syrah (10%) and has a dark, ruby-red berry colour. There are lovely aromas of spice, pepper, clove, liquorice and a hint of the vanilla oak from the six months spent in French barrels. The flavour is clean and fresh with soft, velvety tannins and a finish that tingles with toasted liquorice spice. An interesting wine with bags of regional character that is also extremely well-priced at only £7.99.
