Marquesa de la Cruz Garnacha Syrah Mazuelo - 2010

Marquesa de la cruzStyle: Red

Variety: Garnacha, Syrah, Mazuelo

Year: 2010

Denominación de Origen: Campo de Borja (Aragon)

The region

The traditional red wines of the Campo de Borja DO in Aragon were once known for their strong and robust characteristics. The combination of vines, climate and soil, naturally produced wines of a slightly heavier quality that were a perfect match for the hearty stews and casseroles that dominated the countryside cuisine. As the cuisine of the region has developed, however, so have the wines and although reds of this style are still produced, they are now less fashionable and the wine makers of Aragon have changed their philosophy.

Aragon wine production is now about embracing new techniques to enhance the traditional characters and deliver modern and interesting wines that give a respectful nod to the past. Spanish wine experts are now talking with excitement rather than scepticism about the wine regions of Aragon.

The wine

Having been rather underwhelmed by some of the Spanish wines on offer in Sainsbury's recently it was a pleasant surprise to be introduced to this lovely wine from Scottish wine maker Norrel Robertson. A Master of Wine now applying his considerable skills and experience in the region of Aragon; this wine is a great example of his craft and indeed of what this exciting region can offer.

Hailing from the Campo de Borja Denominación, this Marquesa de la Cruz Garnacha Syrah Mazuelo is a wine that is instantly likeable with warm satisfying spices and berry fruits; it leaves a peppery bite on the tongue and is very drinkable despite a robust backbone which pays homage to the traditional wines of Aragon.

This wine should stand up well to hearty country stews made with pork and chorizo or simple tapas dishes of cheese, olives, ham and almonds.

At £6.99 this wine is a bargain and outshines many of the Spanish wines in the £10 plus bracket and, along with a few other recent arrivals such as Pasico Old Vine Monastrell Shiraz 2010, has put Sainsbury's firmly back on my radar.
