This great little restaurant is located on the historical Plaza del Coso Viejo de Antequera, just a short walk from the city centre. It has a great family atmosphere and serves traditional local cuisine at very reasonable prices.

When you enter, there is a large and welcoming bar adorned with blackboards listing the mesmerizing choice of tapas, raciones and a la carte menu options. Here, you can just pull up a stool and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere or you can head to the more traditional dining room at the rear. The menu is extensive and full of local specialities and the tapas dishes are excellent value starting at just one euro each (at time of writing). The Meson Iberico also has seating outside on the plaza and its gets very busy in the evening; it is a popular place with local residents so booking is advisable for the dining room in the high season.

We ordered various tapas dishes including local ham, cheese from the nearby El Torcal mountains, porra Antequera (local thick cold dip), patatas bravas, berenjenas fritas con miel (crispy fried aubergines with honey), bacalao frito (fried salt cod), local olives and bread. We also had a bottle of Vivillo wine from the nearby Bodegas Malaga Virgen.

The quality of the tapas was excellent - especially when considering the price - and there was plenty of emphasis on quality local produce. The more familiar tapas dishes - such as patatas bravas - were all very well executed. The service was also very good and the food was delivered at traditional pace throughout the evening. Nothing was too much trouble for the waiting staff but it does help if you can speak some basic Spanish. The wine list was also very impressive and included a selection of wine produced in the Malaga region.

Antequera is a city that is well worth a visit for many reasons and Meson Iberico is certainly good enough to earn a place amongst its list of charms.
