The main rice producing regions of Spain have their own Denominaciónes de Origen; this title guarantees the quality and origin of the rice in the same way that it does for Spanish wine. The regions that enjoy this status are Calasparra D.O. in the region of Murcia and Valencia D.O. where the rice has been cultivated for well over a thousand years. The most popular varieties of rice grown in these famous regions are Bomba and Calasparra. Other varieties include Fonsa, Gleva, Bahia and Senia.

In Spain, rice-growing is considered very serious business and the best rice is exported worldwide.
